  28. The cost of the chip and socket are just the start of it.  Actually, my 
  29. 3000 uses an unsocketed 030, and I'd assume that's what they would do 
  30. _if_ they went with the same chip body.  Also, I'm not sure if the EC030 
  31. is a PLCC chip body, it MIGHT be QFP, and those sockets are expen$ive, 
  32. too.

  34. At any rate, the real cost savings here is by NOT having to drill through 
  35. the PCA when mounting the chip.  Each hole costs, both in design 
  36. considerations (on a multilayer board) and in actual labor costs.  A PLCC 
  37. or QFP chip doesn't require that added expense, though, and is easier to 
  38. automate production, too.  All in all, it's a BIG cost savings.  Every 
  39. through-hole component costs MUCH more in _overall_ costs than its SMT 
  40. counterpart.
