- The cost of the chip and socket are just the start of it. Actually, my
- 3000 uses an unsocketed 030, and I'd assume that's what they would do
- _if_ they went with the same chip body. Also, I'm not sure if the EC030
- is a PLCC chip body, it MIGHT be QFP, and those sockets are expen$ive,
- too.

- At any rate, the real cost savings here is by NOT having to drill through
- the PCA when mounting the chip. Each hole costs, both in design
- considerations (on a multilayer board) and in actual labor costs. A PLCC
- or QFP chip doesn't require that added expense, though, and is easier to
- automate production, too. All in all, it's a BIG cost savings. Every
- through-hole component costs MUCH more in _overall_ costs than its SMT
- counterpart.
